The cool weather of fall, winter and early spring is not the time to let your gardens look bare. There a lot of flowers that can bring life and color to your gardens in the cool and cold weather. Here are just a few blooming plants to bring a smile to your face in the harsh weather.
Calendula
Easy color for fall and spring. Daisy like flowers come in shades of orange and bright yellows. Double blooms 2 1/2 - 4 1/2 inches across. 1 -2 ft. tall and 1 1/2 ft wide.
Pansy and Violas
These flowers are invaluable for winter and early spring blooms. In our colder foothill climate pansies and violas can be grown as perennials when protected from intense afternoon heat. These wonderful plants come in all colors and combinations. They will spread by seed and you will find them popping up in fun and interesting places.
Snapdragons
Snapdragons are at their best from early spring through early summer, but can survive if protected from the summer heat. These flowers make excellent borders and cut flowers. Colors range from white, yellow, and many shades of pink.
Cyclamen
These pretty flowers look as though they may be upside down. Flowers suspend over clumps of mounding varigated leaves. Colors range from white, pink to deep red. These flowers will add color to your shade garden in early spring and fall.
Candy Tuft
Free-blooming plants with clusters of white blossoms. These perennials flower from early spring into summer. They do well in full sun to part shade. They make excellent borders, and can fill out a pot nicely.
Primrose
Flowers typically cluster at the ends of single stems filling the plants with color. Colors range from red, blue, and yellow. Plants thrive in the cool weather of spring and fall. Plants give a burst of color along borders and in pots.
