Loss of an Icon

It is with great sadness that we must tell you; one of our own passed away today.  Smokey came to us via Bob Brown, a neighbor and good friend.  Smokey quickly became the official garden cat of Camino Garden Center.  Over the years, Smokey worked his way into our lives and our hearts.  He later went on to author "Smokey's Corner" in our newsletter.  We hang our heads in sadness for the loss of a good friend, a great cat, and a wonderful family member.  Rest in Peace Smokey.

Roses have ARRIVED!!!

Our shipment of roses have arrived.  I will be adding a description and pictures as I have time.  Here is this year's list:

Hot Cocoa
Gardeners will be debating the color of Hot Cocoa, a very novel brownish-orange Floribunda washed with smoke on the top and a deep rusty orange on the underside. How about “smoky chocolate orange?”

In any case, people of all ages are attracted to Hot Cocoa, whose pointed buds of deep rust unfurl to reveal the color that some call “cinnamon brown” and which often takes on a purply cast.

Chrysler Imperial

Crimson Bouquet
This beautiful bright red rose produces brilliant clusters of flowers offset by glossy deep green foliage. The plant is well shaped and not as tall as most grandiflora, but is way above average resistance to common rose diseases.

Mister Lincoln

Falling In Love

Memorial Day
Like the holiday of the same name, Memorial Day is truly worth celebrating. Expertly representing the most popular class of modern roses — hybrid tea — this medium-tall, upright and bushy variety features very large, full, spiraled blooms with more than 50 petals per flower. Evolving from pointed and ovoid buds, Memorial Day’s clear pink flowers are accented with a lavender wash and grow to up to 5 inches in diameter. Its long cutting stems are beautifully clothed with rich green foliage to accent the large blossoms.

With its classic, strong damask rose fragrance, a single Memorial Day rose can fill an entire room with sweet rose perfume. A vigorous and productive performer, Memorial Day is highly disease resistant and especially loves hot weather, particularly for unfurling its commemorative rose petals. It makes a great, easy-to-grow addition to any garden.

Perfume Delight

Midas Touch
Midas Touch makes a regal entrance with its stately stature and gleaming yellow petal crowns. A hybrid tea growing upright to 5 feet, its 4-inch flowers sit dramatically above dark green, semi-glossy foliage.  Jack Christensen hybridized this medium musk scented rose from Brandy and Friesensohne.

St. Patrick
The luck of the Irish blesses the 5-inch flowers of St. Patrick, a rose distinguished by its unique color. Chartreuse buds unfurl slowly (unusual for yellow roses) to reveal a yellow gold flower. As the temperature rises, St. Patrick becomes tinged with shades of green.  This vigorous hybrid tea has long, upright stems graced with grey green foliage and is perfect for indoor bouquets. Introduced by Weeks Roses, St. Patrick was hybridized by Frank Strickland, one of the few amateurs ever to win the AARS award. The rose is an offspring of Brandy and Gold Medal.
Touch of Class

Brandy

About Face
A very novel 'backwards' bicolor whose lighter color of deep golden yellow is carried on the inside of the petals with a darker bronzy orange-red backside. Usually, bicolors have the lighter color on the outside of the petal & a darker inside.
Plump pointed buds open to full old-fashioned blossoms. As the flowers mature, they blush & blend through a very pleasing array of colors all the way to the very finish.  This tall super-vigorous plant yields long stems lush with clean deep green leaves. Easy-to-grow & loaded with color.

Cool Weather Vegetables

Asparagus
Perhaps the ultimate gourmet vegetable, asparagus spears are at their best when freshly harvested.  Plant asparagus roots in the spring.  As a rough guide, ten well-established plants should yield about 7 pounds of spears each season.  Learn more about asparagus here: Asparagus

Beets
Beets are one of the easiest crops to grow.  The large seeds are easy to handle, making it a fun crop for kids too.  Beets will store in the ground well until you are ready to use them.  Sow seeds in early spring for a early summer crop.

Broccoli
Broccoli is an unusual crop because you actually eat the immature flower buds.  If you leave one unpicked it will burst into a mass of bright yellow flowers.  Broccoli is packed with vitamins and nurtrients, which are claimed to help prevent cancer and heart disease.

Carrots
Carrots are a trouble-freebackyard crop, as long as the soil conditions are right.  Sow seeds in early spring or fall.  Carrots store in the ground well, but if you remove them from the ground cut away the stems right away.  Learn more about carrots here: Carrots

Lettuce
Lettuce is the mainstay of a good salad, and growing your own allows you to appreciate it at its freshest.  There are many very different kinds of lettuce and you will have to find your favorite.  Lettuce can be divided into two main catagories head and loose-leaf.  All can be planted in fall or spring, you will want to harvest before the summer heat.

Cabbage
Cabbage takes up plenty of space so give it some room.  It is a cool-weather crop, but you will love to cook with fresh cabbage out of your garden.

Cauliflower
Growing cauliflower can be very rewarding.  The sweet, white curds taste much better straight from the garden.  Plant this vegetable after the danger of frost.  Protect cauliflower from bugs using organic bug sprays.

Peas
The best tasting peas are straight off the vine.  Many peas have edible pods that are just as tasty as the peas themselves.  These can be planted in the spring or the fall.  Not only are the peas great but the flowers are nice to look at.

Chives
One of the easiest herbs to grow, chives have edible hollow leaves and pretty mauve flowers, which also can be eaten.

Garlic
Garlic is unique among vegetables.  It never produces seeds, so the only way to propagate it is by saving cloves.  Fortunately, each clove you plant divides into a bulb containing 12-15 new ones.  This vegetable is very easy to grow, making it a favorite of those who love to cook.

Onions
Onions can easily be grown from seed or sets.  Onion sets are the small babies that onions produce.  Growing your own onions will provide you with onions year around.  Unused onions are easy to dry and store for later use.  The best part may be that onions do not need much room.

Radishes
Radishes are so quick and easy to grow that you can enjoy several crops through the year.  Because they take up little space, radishes are the perfect fill-in crop.  You can fit them in between large or slower-growing vegetables.  The pods on radishes are edible too, and they can add a hot crunch to your salad.

Rhubarb
Rhubarb is a perennial vegetable that you can use to make sweet dishes.  This vegetable likes to take up space, so give it some room.  Rhubarb is one of the lowest maintenance vegetables making it easy to grow for the novice gardener.

Scallions
Scallions or green onions are quick and easy crops that you can fit in any spare ground.  These vegetables grow quickly so sow several crops through year to give you plenty of supply.

Turnips
Turnips are another quick and easy crop to grow.  They make a great fill-in crop around cabbage and lettuce.  You can grow them in the spring or the fall.

Cool Weather Bloomers

The cool weather of fall, winter and early spring is not the time to let your gardens look bare.  There a lot of flowers that can bring life and color to your gardens in the cool and cold weather.  Here are just a few blooming plants to bring a smile to your face in the harsh weather.

Calendula
Easy color for fall and spring.  Daisy like flowers come in shades of orange and bright yellows.  Double blooms 2 1/2 - 4 1/2 inches across.  1 -2 ft. tall and 1 1/2 ft wide.

Pansy and Violas
These flowers are invaluable for winter and early spring blooms.  In our colder foothill climate pansies and violas can be grown as perennials when protected from intense afternoon heat.  These wonderful plants come in all colors and combinations.  They will spread by seed and you will find them popping up in fun and interesting places.

Snapdragons
Snapdragons are at their best from early spring through early summer, but can survive if protected from the summer heat.  These flowers make excellent  borders and cut flowers.  Colors range from white, yellow, and many shades of pink.

Cyclamen
These pretty flowers look as though they may be upside down.  Flowers suspend over clumps of mounding varigated leaves.  Colors range from white, pink to deep red.  These flowers will add color to your shade garden in early spring and fall.

Candy Tuft
Free-blooming plants with clusters of white blossoms.  These perennials flower from early spring into summer.  They do well in full sun to part shade.  They make excellent borders, and can fill out a pot nicely.

Primrose
Flowers typically cluster at the ends of single stems filling the plants with color.  Colors range from red, blue, and yellow.  Plants thrive in the cool weather of spring and fall.  Plants give a burst of color along borders and in pots.
